Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
