Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
