Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
