At least 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
